Developing Your Musicianship Skills
Developing as a musician can, at times, become the most frustrating process you will ever have to endure. There will always be an aspect of musicianship you struggle with, whether it be music theory, ear training, playing in an ensemble, etc. It's never going to be easy, I'm sorry to say, but there are a lot of things you can do to refine your practice methods to limit the agnozing feeling of "just not getting it." Sometimes, it's just as easy as looking at things from a different perspective, or stopping to relax and take a breath. People make practicing seem a lot more difficult and strenuous than it really is. The only thing that should ever matter when you are practicing is that you are working to your potential. A lot of people become bogged down because they think they are not good enough, and ironically this makes them lazy practicers, (I made that word up) and as a result, bad musicians. Don't let this happen to you. By the same token, many people refuse to recognize their limits, and as a result take on too much during their practice time, and can't really play any of their material that well by the end. For instance, is it really necessary to practice 6 hours a day? A lot of musicians use their long practice sessions as bragging rights, and some of them are actually very good, but in a lot of cases, practicing more isn't always practicing better.
